A great backcountry hiking lens
05/10/2025
The Olympus 9-18mm F4.0-5.6 II has quickly become my go-to lens for backcountry hiking. After
using the 14-150mm F4.0-5.6 II as my default lens for its versatility and lightweight design, I realized that most of my landscape shots were taken at the wider end of the focal range. Making the switch to the 9-18mm transformed my photography experience on multi-day outings. The extra-wide angle is incredibly useful for capturing sweeping vistas and making the most of dramatic scenery. I find myself now using the entire zoom range more evenly, which speaks to how well-suited this lens is for hiking adventures.
A major advantage of the 9-18mm is its compact size and light weight, which pairs perfectly with the OM-5 body—an important consideration when every ounce matters on long treks. Another standout feature is how much easier it is to control sun glare compared to the heavier 7-14mm F2.8 PRO, which I now reserve for shorter, local outings to avoid carrying extra weight. While I still pack the 14-150mm for the occasional wildlife shot or camp portrait, it rarely leaves my bag compared to the 9-18mm, which is almost always in use.
Even with its F4.0 aperture, I’ve found the lens sharpness and low-light performance to be more than sufficient for capturing stars and the Milky Way in remote locations. Overall, the 9-18mm F4.0-5.6 II is a superb choice for backcountry photographers seeking a lightweight, compact, and versatile wide-angle zoom.
