Master creative light painting

with the M.Zuiko 7-14mm F2.8 PRO Lens

By OM SYSTEM Ambassador Hannu Hutamo, Finland

My photography journey initially focused on dark urban environments, where I explored abandoned buildings and tunnels for light painting. These cramped spaces often required an ultra-wide lens to capture the textures of decay. Over time, I shifted to outdoor locations like national parks and shorelines, where nightfall provided the perfect canvas for light painting.

While the M.Zuiko 12-40mm F2.8 PRO II became my go-to lens, certain compositions demanded more space. As Finland entered its darkest season, I took the M.Zuiko 7-14mm F2.8 PRO to experiment with light art and expand my starry sky collection.

1. Illuminate the Foreground:

For Milky Way images, simple lighting techniques, like using a phone screen to highlight a tree or rock, can enhance the foreground. Keep the light subtle to avoid overpowering the shot.

2. Star Trails with a Twist:

The Live Composite feature makes capturing star trails easy by showing them as they develop in real time. Using the 7-14mm F2.8 PRO lens, you can add urban elements to contrast the stars, like a rusted car or an abandoned structure.

3. Milky Way & Light Painting:

Combining astrophotography with light painting is challenging due to the sensitivity of the camera for Milky Way shots. Using the lowest possible light intensity ensures the stars stay sharp, and the 7-14mm F2.8 PRO provides up to 35 seconds for light drawings before star trails appear.

4. Play with Perspective:

Ultra-wide lenses, like the 7-14mm F2.8 PRO, allow for dramatic compositions by exaggerating the center, edges, and corners of the frame. This creates dynamic perspectives with strong leading lines and sharp focus across the image.

Final Thoughts:

The M.Zuiko 7-14mm F2.8 PRO lens is ideal for low-light conditions, offering fast aperture and sharpness for light painting and astrophotography. Paired with the OM SYSTEM camera’s Live Composite feature, it’s a powerful tool for exploring new creative angles and perspectives in the night sky.
