The true essence of Micro Four Thirds
rating-star rating-star rating-star rating-star unfilled-rating-star
16/06/2026
I love this camera, it reignited my love for photography. It's small, compact, lightweight, but it feels nice and "premium" in the hand. The controls are well placed, with good feedback and many buttons and dials are very configurable. The IBIS is fantastic and the image quality is very good, 20 Mpix is enough for most enthusiasts. Together with the 12-45mm f/4 PRO it's a killer combo for travel and hiking when you want the most unobtrusive but rugged and weather sealed gear possible. Finally the jpegs it produces are phenomenal and I find even the raw files to be already pleasant and requiring very little post processing to bring the best out of them I believe that the OM-5 Mk.II embodies the true essence of what Micro Four Thirds should be, a compact but very capable camera, the OM-1 and OM-3 might be more capable, but they are definitively less compact and more expensive. I really would love to give this camera 5 stars, however it's not without flaws. I feel the autofocus performance is worse compared to similar cameras (a bit in AF-S, but especially AF-C) and I think the lack of subject recognition (outside of human faces) is inexcusable. The computational photography features can be very useful in the right circumstances, but they have to be understood and used correctly, and in some cases I can see the camera struggling with them, taking a lot of time processing the images (for example in the High Res modes) while draining the battery considerably faster. Finally a couple smaller annoyances are the metal triangle loop for the strap on the grip side digs into the hand, especially if you have bigger hands (the anchor point for the strap should be located higher), and the fact that the mode dial only has one Custom (C) option, with the other ones accessible only via menu. I would still wholeheartedly recommend this camera to anyone who is looking for a compact, rugged mirrorless camera but that it's also capable and stylish, and I really hope OM System will bring improvements to this line of cameras, without sacrificing its phenomenal form factor.
