Superb compact and high speed camera
Review left for OM SYSTEM OM-1 with 12-40mm PRO II Lens Kit
31/03/2026
I am new to the MFT format, having shot full frame for many years and APS C before that. This is an amazing camera. Build quality, size and results are very very good. I would recommend the camera to anyone looking for a compact high quality and fast system. I have used the camera for landscapes, wildlife (my 3 standard poodles, humming birds, so not serious wildlife), portraits and family shots with equal success. Pictures are remarkably detailed (given my expectations from a 20 MP sensor) and have good dynamic range. Since it is a stacked sensor, rolling shutter is almost a non issue, something I cannot say of my Sony A7RV.
Lenses are very high quality and the included 12 - 40 f/2.8 lens is very very good. Sharp and very well built. Fast enough to use in low low light and having a reasonably wide angle (24 mm in FF equivalent) capability, it makes the ideal walk around lens that is flexible enough for 85% of the situations I encounter.
Controls are well places and the camera feels very good in my medium sized hands. I was looking for a smaller camera that I could take with me in situations that I would not take my Sony A7RV and it fulfills that function extraordinarily well, given that most of the time I now pick up this camera rather than either my Sony or Fuji X100VI.
Downsides are the very expensive batteries, although you do get a reasonable life out of them (not as good as the Sony, but much better than the Fuji) and the good lenses can be as expensive as decent FF glass, although a lot smaller and lighter. True wide angle lenses (<10 MM in MFT) are quite expensive and I cannot find what I call good quality mid range lenses like Tamron for the FF world, but the flexibility of the lenses you can get can make up for that.
Overall a superb camera that I would not hesitate to recommend to the serious photographer for a wide variety of circumstances and not just the wildlife world that seems to be the focus of the promotional material. But more importantly, one you are more likely to have with you.

Weather sealed excellence for active photography.
Review left for OM SYSTEM OM-1 with 12-40mm PRO II Lens Kit

The camera and the lens is awesome. I love the overall build and design of both the camera and lens. The camera is easy to understand and you can customize the buttons places. The lens is great because it has the manual and automatic option. They both have great weather seal that I used in -36 degrees and snowing. Had no problems.

Most comfortable camera ever, great for wildlife
25/12/2025
I love this camera. I've never had a camera body feel so perfect in my hands, and that's what makes it special. Its autofocus has impressed me, even though I'm not pairing it with the best lens for that (image below taken with the PanaLeica 100-400).
I do have a handful of gripes, but they don't really take away from my love of the OM1. The color profiles available in 10-bit shooting are tough to make work, for me, so I've had to resort to shooting in 8-bit depth.
Overall, this camera feels like home. I expect to be using it for years and years to come.

Totally Worth It!
17/12/2025
I've had the camera for about 8 months and practiced with it before going to Africa for safaris. While on safari, I found the camera performed spectacularly. I had a high success rate for capturing most animals and birds.
Additionally, I also used for shooting the night sky. The star mode focus worked surprisingly well. Admittedly, it would be nice if Olympus could find a higher resolution sensor and still maintain the 4/3 format.
The photo attached is a southern ground hornbill bird. This photo is unretouched and uncropped. Despite being a JPG file, when you zoom in, you can see it's eye and pupil clearly. This bird was about 30 to 40 m away.
One issue I did come across was shooting birds. Despite having preprogrammed setting for birds, with a minimum shutter speed of 1/500 sec, the camera would sometimes shoot at slower shutter speeds and some photos were blurry. Not sure why the camera allowed slower shutter speeds to be used.
Overall, this camera is an amazing piece of technology and I am glad I bought it.

Great choice for a mature adventurer.

I have been playing around with my OM 1 for a few weeks. I upgraded from a Canon Rebel. Wow!!! This camera is so much fun. My pictures have the detail that I desperately wanted.
I have watched several YouTube videos to learn about the OM 1. They have really helped me learn about the camera’s capabilities.
Mostly, I use my camera when I travel and for landscape photography. I wanted to travel with a lighter camera and few lenses. I can’t wait to take my OM 1 on my next adventure.

From Macro to Moonlight in One Small Bag
03/11/2025
I recently picked up the Olympus OM-1 with three lenses that cover everything I wanted to shoot, from astro and landscapes to macro and wildlife. My kit includes the 12–40mm f/2.8 PRO, 90mm f/3.5 Macro PRO, and 150–600mm, plus the 1.4× teleconverter and STF-8 flash. With this setup I can capture anything from a jumping spider’s eyes to the craters of the moon, all within the first few weeks of using the camera.
The OM-1’s features are incredible, including Live ND, High Res Shot, Focus Stacking, and excellent subject tracking. The image stabilization, especially when combined with stabilized lenses, is outstanding. I can shoot handheld at very low shutter speeds even in low light or at long distances. The autofocus tracking has been just as impressive. I have even gotten my first bird in flight photos, and they turned out amazing. I have not tried Starry Sky AF yet, but I have already been blown away by the results so far.
The portability of the whole system continues to amaze me. My camera, lenses, lens hoods, teleconverter, batteries, lens filters, cleaning gear, and rain cover all fit into a 22 liter pack. That gives me a 24 to 1680 millimeter full frame equivalent range, all optically, in one compact bag without a ton of weight.
For lighter outings, I use a 10 liter sling, which easily holds my 150-600 lens, another lens, the TC and some other gear, so I can switch setups easily on the go. Whether I am walking through a park or traveling, I can cover nearly any type of shooting without feeling weighed down.
Coming from a bridge camera, the OM-1 had a learning curve, but between videos, books, and AI help, I picked it up quickly. The results have been amazing, sharp, detailed, and versatile.
The OM-1 is a powerful, portable, and fun system that lets me shoot just about anything, anywhere.

Excellent camera
08/10/2025
Have not had much time to use it, but so far is flawless. Extremely quick and precise focusing on my Pro lenses. Significant computational features compared to rivals. Lightweight and compact. Excellent viewfinder. Protected from adverse weather ingress (and published as such). I could go on and on.
The only downside is so far is the grip is larger than my E-M1 Mk I, making using the 12-40 mm Pro F 2.8 a bit difficult. I much prefer the ergonomics of the E-MI in this regard Ditto to the BLH-10 battery holder (see my review on that). I don't have big hands.
But still, an amazing camera. I believe Olympus is "bang on" to focus on demanding outdoor/nature subject material. The 4/3 format offers so much more in this regard to other brands. And for viewing on a screen pictures are A-1. I don't print, so cannot comment on that.
